College papers and memorabilia of Jeremy Burton, one of the first undergraduates

Including papers giving administrative arrangements for new undergraduate students in 1961 with information about lodgings (they had to lodge in the City as accommodation was not available in College), grants and University awards, notes re expenses of undergraduate members and engagements during first week; plus College bills and notices throughout Mr Burton's time at Cambridge, and copies of Boat Club menus and Bumps programmes; copy of Cambridge Union Society programme for Michaelmas Term 1961 [Committee then including John Gummer, Michael Howard and Kenneth Clarke]. Also includes two photographs: one showing a student room at Churchill College in the 1960's with ?Jeremy Burton reading on the bed; the second a Cambridge News image of the college in June 1964.

Includes material about the 1969 Churchill International Student Conference which Mike Trier helped to organise including a poster, and copies of press cuttings. Also includes photographs taken by Michael Norwich of the dining room set up for the conference, the sculpture "Square with Two Circles" by Barbara Hepworth, views of the college (one showing the chapel being built) and punting on the Cam. Also includes a copy of a hoax diabetes test with explanatory article by Mike Trier.

Description:
Black and white film documenting the construction of Churchill College. Credit sequence reads "Sound: Paul Barton, Titles: Martyn Stroud, Producers: Nigel Birch, Andrew Bird". The film was directed by Dr Andrew Sinclair and the narrator was Andrew Bird, reading from his own script.

Scenes in the film show: plans of the college; a cricket match; the building site, cranes, and workers' compound; building in progress and rubbish and mud on site; piles of building materials including bricks piled with straw between them to protect against breakages; scaffolding; the workers' routine leaving the site at the end of the day, some in a Rattee and Kett bus, and arriving in the morning; social life in the college including playing croquet, the common room, temporary kitchen and meals in the temporary dining hall; details of construction work including brick laying, copper lining on exteriors, and construction of main staircase from concrete; the arrival of undergraduates; decoration and fitting out of the interior of the college including plastering, laying timber floors, tiling and painting; undergraduate activities including socialising, academic supervisions, sport; a college garden party with Sir John Cockcroft, Richard Sheppard, Andrew Sinclair, John Morrison, George Steiner and Denys Armstrong; and finally the completed building and tree planted by Sir Winston Churchill.

Blue fabric cap with the Union Jack and Olympic rings stitched on the front, with badly-worn lettering reading "Olympics 1936". Also includes account by Professor Michael Pilling (UG 1961-4, PG 1964-7 and JRF 1967-70) of being given the cap by Canon Duckworth with transcription of an inscription in a book also given to him by Duckworth.
